A calendar of international conferences, workshops, seminars, and all kinds of event related to Climateurope activities and topics: Climate Services, Climate Observation, and Earth-System modeling
The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) is pleased to announce the 4th International Conference on Earth System Modelling (4ICESM). 4ICESM will advance discourse on idealizations and model hierarchies of the Earth System as tools for understanding our changing climate.
The conference will focus on the four themes listed below, punctuated by cross-cutting presentations on the history, philosophy and sociology of Earth system science.
Oral and poster contributions to the following sessions, each of which will be kicked off by two keynote presentations, are invited:
I. Clouds, circulation and climate sensitivity (Convenors: Bjorn Stevens and Sandrine Bony)
II. Decadal prediction and attribution (Convenors: Jochem Marotzke and Gabi Hegerl)
III. Modelling past climate changes (Convenors: Martin Claussen and Pascale Braconnot)
IV. Carbon feedbacks in the climate system (Convenors: Tatiana Ilyina and Pierre Friedlingstein)
Further information, including abstract submission details and an initial list of confirmed speakers will be distributed in the near future.
The 15th International Swiss Climate Summer School is focusing on the theme “Climate Risks – Coping with Uncertainty”. This theme has been chosen due to its paramount importance in terms of both scientific challenges and pressing societal concerns. Always with a focus on uncertainty, the specific topics include:
- What is “dangerous climate change”?
- Emergent climate risks and vulnerability
- From global climate change to regional impacts
- Economics of climate change and adaptation, geo-engineering
- Ethical aspects, policy choices and policy making
The Summer School invites young researchers from all fields of climate research. The courses cover a broad spectrum of climate and climate impact research issues and foster cross-disciplinary links. Each topic includes keynote plenary lectures and workshops with in-depth discussion in smaller groups. All Summer School participants are expected to present a poster of their research and there will be ample opportunity for discussion.
Many universities across the world perform state- of-the art research on matters related to climate change, both in respect of mitigation, and adaptation. Yet, as shown by the latest 21st Conference of the Parties of the UN Convention on Climate Change (COP 21), held in Paris in December 2015, there is much room for improvements in the role played by universities in the negotiations and in influencing decision-making on a matter of such a global importance.
There are unfortunately relatively few events where a multidisciplinary overview of university-based research efforts and projects on climate change can be show cased, and where researchers from across the spectrum of the natural and social sciences have had the opportunity to come together to discuss research methods, the results of empirical research or exchange ideas about on-going and future research initiatives focusing on climate change mitigation and adaptation.
It is against this background that the Symposium “Universities and Climate Change: the Role of Higher Education Institutions in Addressing the Mitigation and Adaptation Challenges” is being organised by Manchester Metropolitan University, UK and HAW Hamburg, Germany, under the auspices of the International Climate Change Information Programme (ICCIP).
It will involve researchers in the field of climate change in the widest sense, not only from traditional climate science, but also from the fields of environment, human geography, business and economics, arts, administration and media studies.
The Symposium will focus on the role of higher education institutions in addressing the mitigation and adaptation challenges and will contribute to the further development of this fast-growing field.
Because of the range of topics presented and discussed and the breadth of the audience, the RSS Conference is the only one in the UK where all statisticians and users of data gather together. So it’s the best forum to share information, network and learn from one another.
Now in its 24th year, the conference has gained prestige for its focus on current statistical issues, how it fosters the exchange of ideas and information and the quality of its speakers. Plenary speakers in 2016 will include Christl Donnelly (Imperial College London), Anne Glover (former Chief Scientific Adviser, European Commission) and Xiao-Li Meng (Harvard University).
This annual conference regularly attracts over 450 participants from all over the world, ranging from senior academic statisticians through to new graduates and postgraduate students, with strong representation from the public sector as well as statisticians and data scientists working in industry or as independent consultants. There is also a growing group of people who have an interest in statistics but who don’t work in the field.
The conference is popular to such a diverse audience because it offers a broad and varied programme of talks and workshops not found in any other UK based statistical conference.
The seminar is part of ECMWF’s educational programme and is aimed at young scientists but also more established scientists that want to engage more with the challenges of Earth system modelling for seamless prediction.
The deadline for registration is 4 August 2016.
In the framework of the Slovak Presidency of the Council of the EU, the Slovak Ministry of the Environment is organising an international conference ‘T2gE – Transition to the Green Economy’. The flagship event takes place on 6 and 7 September at the Hotel Saffron in Bratislava.
With this event the Ministry aims to attract the attention of experts, politicians, senior EU officials, international organisations, universities, research and science experts, the business sector and civil society and to create a space for informed discussion of the key questions on the transition to a green economy. The focus of the discussions will be on actions of key stakeholders, including financial and investments actors, supporting transition to the green economy. One of the main discussion sessions will be aimed at the role of research and innovation in accelerating such a transition, the issues of a demand to the community of researchers and innovators, the obstacles that researchers and innovators meet when developing and deploying innovative solutions, including their implementation in a real life. A part of the conference will devote time to presenting examples of innovative solutions and approaches from Slovakia and EU countries.

Regardless of the sector, energy efficiency is key to productivity, energy security, job creation and lower carbon intensity. The next eceee industrial energy efficiency event will be held in Berlin in September 2016 with a partly renewed format. Following a careful evaluation of the 2012 and 2014 Summer Studies and listening to the input from many participants and stakeholders, we have created a conference that will last for two days, starting in the afternoon of Monday 12 September and ending in the afternoon of Wednesday 14 September.
